  • CCA 6th Annual Talent Show

Central California Alliance (CCA) held it’s 6th Annual Talent Show on Tuesday night, January 24th, at Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater in the Tower District.

Gay Fresno staff was in attendance and had a wonderful time. The evening began with dinner and conversation, followed by a viewing of the items up for silent auction.

Once the show started, the full house responded enthusiastically to the roster of entertainers taking the stage. From musical standards to Broadway, the vocalists were emotional and strong. There were energetic dance performances alongside both broad and satirical comedy. Rounding things out was a beautiful and delicate selection performed with hand bells, and a stellar performance of cutting edge, humor infused hip-hop by The Argyle Pimps.

The evening included performances by Thomas Fitzgerald, Three From The Heart, Icon, Tracy Jones, Anthonie Trujillo, Richard Gosvener,  Brian X, The Argyle Pimps, Lilly Murray, Beth Gonzales and The Fresno Gay Men’s Chorus.

  • California's Battle For Marriage Equality

Join EQCA & Gay Fresno on Valentines Day by requesting a marriage license from Fresno County as an LGBT couple or individual...see CALENDAR for details...

I sat down recently to talk with Molly McKay, Field Director for Equality California, www.eqca.org  during her visit to Fresno for a meeting with EQCA’s local chapter leaders. We discussed the issue of marriage equality in California and what we can expect in 2006. While the battle rages on, Molly is confident California is on the edge of the legalization of gay marriage.

Until that day comes, we can’t slow down in our efforts to do everything to educate and inform Californians about the consequences to LGBT individuals if we continue to be denied the right to marry. Molly shared with me a story of a senior gay couple who’d been together for 50 years. When one partner died, the other was left with nothing, literally no place to live. These are the kind of things that need to be made clear to those not supporting equal civil rights for gay people. It’s difficult to believe that in the United States Of America, the greatest country on Earth, many of our fellow citizens, while often risking everything to commit to an openly gay relationship, may be left with none of the protections afforded our heterosexual counterparts.
  • Nathan Christoffersen Memorial Fund

Our friend, colleague and fellow activist Nathan Christoffersen, a 28-year-old volunteer who ran EQCA’s Madera County chapter, passed away under tragic and disturbing circumstances. In honor of Nathan’s life and work, Equality California has established a fund to create a field organizer position in the Central Valley. EQCA hopes to generate $15,000 in donations to continue the work so desperately needed in the Central Valley.

Please Make a Donation to the Nathan Christoffersen Memorial Fund Today

Nathan’s life, his work as an activist, and his heartbreaking death, are crucial reminders of the importance of EQCA’s mission; to ensure and promote dignity, safety and equality for all LGBT Californians.  Please click here to read Nathan’s full story and ensure that his legacy continues to inspire our youth, friends and colleagues.

The following video has recently been released by the Fresno fire department.  They are looking for what is described as a white pickup truck (the vehicle appears to have a dark stripe or sign on the drivers side door).  If you have any information please contact Crime Stoppers at 498-STOP.

I attended a screening of Brokeback Mountain on Monday with a gathering of friends and others brought together by Gay Fresno. It was a great movie and a great experience. We had good laughs, good conversation and I felt a unity and appreciation in the group. We’re proud this film is out there, getting incredible reviews and making a lot of money. This groundbreaking movie is one of those things that comes around for us only once in a while, and I could feel it in myself and those around me.

Watching Brokeback at the IMAX theater on a big screen was mesmerizing. The film is truly remarkable. It’s a quiet movie, filled with subtlety and carefully orchestrated shots. The acting, especially by Heath Ledger, is superior. I believed every person and situation in this film and I couldn’t take my eyes off it.

  • Fire at North Tower Circle is Confirmed as Arson

Image  The Fresno Fire Department confirmed at a press conference on January 9th, that the September 2005 fire that heavily damaged the North Tower Circle nightclub was deliberately set.
  • Nathan

nathan.jpgUPDATE: See below for links to the articles in ADVOCATE

I knew Nathan for only a short time.  With Nathan, however, even a short time was packed with conversation.

It was September of last year and I was a DJ at the North Tower Circle. I met Nathan while spinning for a moderate Wednesday night crowd. After ending a track, I turned from the mixer to check for music when I saw Nathan bounding up the steep, wooden steps to greet me, full of energy and holding a stack of papers. He’d come to the club with Jason from GayFresno.com and was soliciting petition signatures to combat Governor Schwarzenegger, who was about to veto a state legislature decision to allow gay marriage in California.

  • American Truth

    flag_wave.JPG
I’m fascinated and bewildered by American discourse, specifically the difference between what we say as a nation and what we do. Never has that been more clear than now, when the line between fact and fiction is beyond blurry, it’s virtually vanished.

When I grew up in the late sixties and seventies, information was not as readily available as it is today. For me, that created both frustration and acceptance. Frustration because it seemed pretty obvious to me that many of the things we were fighting over in America had to do with the lack of access to the truth. Acceptance because I could see that this would eventually change. All it would take is time for the truth to come out, for us to become more connected to facts and not supposition.

  • God Bless Flashbacks

Oh, my God. It’s Phyllis Schlafly.

There’s a name I hadn’t heard, and a face I hadn’t seen, in a very long time. She was about to be interviewed by Bill Maher on REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER. www.hbo.com

Phyllis Schlafly is a famous anti-feminist, anti-abortionist who’s been doing her thing since the early 1940’s.www.eagleforum.org

I remembered her from the seventies and I know it’s hard to believe, but when I saw her I could swear she was wearing the same satin suit she wore the last time I saw her, somewhere in the vicinity of 1979. She had the same upswept, plastered hairdo and the same condescendingly mocking smile. And let me tell you, that’s something you miss, a good condescendingly mocking smile. There were more wrinkles, of course, and she’d lost some pigment. She wasn’t quite as quick, but there was no doubt about it, it was Phyllis Schlafly.

Could Anita Bryant be far behind?
