  • Gay Court Ruling and Fresno's Creative Class

No doubt most MindHubbers -- being much better informed than the average citizen -- heard last week's news of California's gay marriage ban being ruled unconstitutional.

If Richard Florida's “The Rise of the Creative Class” happens to be right in its tripartite analysis of the keys to creative class success (technology, talent, and tolerance, or "the gay index" as Florida puts it), this pro-equality marriage ruling promises a boon to California's massive multi-billion dollar creative industries of technology, entertainment and the arts, as well as to tourism.

Unfortunately, Fresno appears yet again poised for last-to-benefit status, its already-besmirched name coming up once more in an unflattering national spotlight, thanks to the public comments of Mayor Autry.

I noticed MindHubbers, who are no doubt familiar with Florida's influential work, seem to have let the historical moment slip without commentary on what could be a potential upside for Fresno's own creative class. Florida makes the sound case that a tolerant social climate parallels numerous factors that make a region flourish creatively and financially. So I believe it's worth noting that the marriage ruling is good for Fresno and the Valley in important ways.

Conversely, Autry's public stance is bad for business, and his anti-equality crowing on the gay marriage issue has earned Fresno yet more bad press. You might have seen it: In San Francisco, Mayor Gavin Newsom's first public statement -- following the court successfully striking down the ban as unconstitutional on equal protection grounds -- was nationally televised. In it, he said the ruling would be good not just for San Francisco, but for San Bernardino, as well as a variety of other Golden State cities, with mention of Fresno being saved dead last on his list, presumably due in his mind to the Valley being the nadir of ignorance and homophobia, and the generally retrograde and hospitable home for hillbillies.

  • Entertainment Reviews

    Image Parting Glances
Rated NR / Written & Directed by Bill Sherwood
    Starring Richard Ganoung/John Bolger/Steve Buscemi/Kathy Kinney

Review by Leon Velasco  Rating: Eh, So-So

I was hoping when I watched this movie that I would see more of Steve Buscemi (Armageddon, Big Daddy), but that wasn’t the case. I was surprised how ever to see Kathy Kinney (Drew Carey Show) in her thinner years. I watched this movie twice, the first time I kept getting interrupted and the second time I kept dozing off. If your in the mood for having some background noise while taking a nap, this movie will do the job. It was ok, but it could have used something, it was flatter than a 12 year old girl’s chest. It stuck to the storyline but it just seemed to drag and the ending sucked with a capital “D” for disappointment. This movie was made in 1991 Amidst AIDS scenario and received high reviews from major periodicals.

Gay Pride presents itself in various ways throughout the world, but for Americans, as our country slips behind the global mark in terms of civil rights, and each year begins to take on a tone which may not have been as critical since the early days of the movement.

  • CVPPAC Redefines Progressivism

The Central Valley Progressive Political Action Committee (CVPPAC) has released its list of endorsements for the June 3, 2008 Primary election and in the process has redefined the term progressive.

Following on the heels of its 2006 endorsement of Margaret Mims for Fresno County Sheriff, the CVPPAC continues to break ground towards constructing a new model for progressivism in the San Joaquin Valley.

Mims, the darling of the local Democratic Party, soon after her progressive endorsement began to reveal her true nature with support for unjust legislation and ideological alignment with the likes of Mike Reynolds (Three Strikes), Jerry Duncan (Dirty Bomb), and Jerry Dyer (Occupying Force).

The CVPPAC's endorsements for 2008 include Nathan Magsig, a Christian Fundamentalist who "strongly believes that America’s traditional values must be preserved" and who supports a bigoted agenda to maintain second-class status for gay and lesbian people.

Though labeled as progressive by the CVPPAC, Magsig's political views are hardly progressive. Magsig "strongly supports incarcerating youth gang members as adults, and he is a supporter of the death penalty." He wants to "immediately build more highway lane miles" and "rewrite the Endangered Species Act."

The Central Valley Progressive Political Action Committee's endorsement of Nathan Magsig - along with some other questionable endorsements - raises a serious question. "Are you folks nuts?"

Every dream has its price…From Executive producer Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Finding Forrester) comes another compelling story of a teenage dreamer. Johnny (Jesse Bradford, Clockstoppers) has run away from home to pursue his fantasy to race cars – but he runs into trouble and out of money in Las Vegas. Gay street hustler Eric (Jordan Brower, Teen Angel) befriends Johnny and introduces him to his gang, including Steven (Johnathan Taylor Thomas, Home Improvement), Wilma (Tiffani-Amber Theissen, Beverly Hills 90210) and Erics Serrogate mother Veronica (Darryl Hannah, Splash). As the two boys become close, they are confronted with a life-threatening situation involving drugs, money and betrayal, and Johnny must decide if he has what it takes to follow his dream.
