CVPPAC Redefines Progressivism

The Central Valley Progressive Political Action Committee (CVPPAC) has released its list of endorsements for the June 3, 2008 Primary election and in the process has redefined the term progressive.

Following on the heels of its 2006 endorsement of Margaret Mims for Fresno County Sheriff, the CVPPAC continues to break ground towards constructing a new model for progressivism in the San Joaquin Valley.

Mims, the darling of the local Democratic Party, soon after her progressive endorsement began to reveal her true nature with support for unjust legislation and ideological alignment with the likes of Mike Reynolds (Three Strikes), Jerry Duncan (Dirty Bomb), and Jerry Dyer (Occupying Force).

The CVPPAC's endorsements for 2008 include Nathan Magsig, a Christian Fundamentalist who "strongly believes that America’s traditional values must be preserved" and who supports a bigoted agenda to maintain second-class status for gay and lesbian people.

Though labeled as progressive by the CVPPAC, Magsig's political views are hardly progressive. Magsig "strongly supports incarcerating youth gang members as adults, and he is a supporter of the death penalty." He wants to "immediately build more highway lane miles" and "rewrite the Endangered Species Act."

The Central Valley Progressive Political Action Committee's endorsement of Nathan Magsig - along with some other questionable endorsements - raises a serious question. "Are you folks nuts?"

Ah, Republicans...

They just keep coming. It’s like a movie no one would believe. Another conservative, Republican member of Congress has fallen. Vito Fossella of New York, who’s worked legislatively to support a constitutional amendment barring same sex marriage, voted against the Matthew Shepard Act to add gays to hate crime laws, and touted himself as another one of those “family values” kind of conservative Americans, has crashed and burned in the spotlight of revelation. He’s been arrested for drunk driving and it’s been learned that he’s had an extramarital affair, and a child born of that affair. Just how full of BS are American conservatives anyway? In Episode 13 "Chow Not So Fun",  comedian Erin Foley and I spend some time hangin' out.  Despite having just survived a night of "chow fun's revenge", Erin manages to join me for some reminiscing about how we met playing ultimate Frisbee and some fruits and vegetables come into play when we examine the large size of our hands. Lucia asks me some questions about learning how to ride while I wash the "Dinah dirt" off of my bike and my gorgeous neighbor Daniel shows up right on time with cocktails. After taking on three AfterEllen.com viewer letters and a lot of laughs, Erin takes her first motorcycle ride ever on the back of my Triumph...

Every dream has its price…From Executive producer Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Finding Forrester) comes another compelling story of a teenage dreamer. Johnny (Jesse Bradford, Clockstoppers) has run away from home to pursue his fantasy to race cars – but he runs into trouble and out of money in Las Vegas. Gay street hustler Eric (Jordan Brower, Teen Angel) befriends Johnny and introduces him to his gang, including Steven (Johnathan Taylor Thomas, Home Improvement), Wilma (Tiffani-Amber Theissen, Beverly Hills 90210) and Erics Serrogate mother Veronica (Darryl Hannah, Splash). As the two boys become close, they are confronted with a life-threatening situation involving drugs, money and betrayal, and Johnny must decide if he has what it takes to follow his dream.

What is AIDS?

This is the first in a series of health articles by Dr. Maninderjit Singh M.D.

What is AIDS?

AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which kills or impairs cells of the immune system and progressively destroys the body's ability to fight infections and certain cancers. HIV is most commonly spread by sexual contact with an infected partner.

The term AIDS applies to the most advanced stages of an HIV infection. Official criteria for the definition of AIDS are developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which is responsible for tracking the spread of AIDS in the United States . The 1993 CDC definition of AIDS includes all HIV-infected people who have fewer than 200 CD4+ T cells. (Healthy adults usually have CD4+ T-cell counts of 800 or more.) In addition, the definition includes 26 clinical conditions that affect people with advanced HIV disease.
