With Christmas and the end of the year fast approaching, there’s no better time to donate cash or goods to any number of nonprofit organizations. Christmas in America has become crass and excessive, with a constant barrage of advertising targeted to empty our pockets on yet another material possession we probably don’t need. While people camp outside department stores for two days just so they can buy the latest tech gadget, there are a multitude of organizations which could put some of our money to much better use, helping any number of people in need. Most donations are also tax deductible, but in order to be valid for the tax year of 2007, they must be made by December 31^st.

World AIDS Day 2007

The World AIDS Day Celebration will be held on Saturday, December 1^st, from 5:30PM to 8:00PM at the historic Tower Theater located at 815 E Olive Avenue in the Tower District. This annual event is free of charge and will include viewing of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, guest speakers, and live local entertainment. Please see the attached poster for more information.

Gay Genetic Study

The largest study of it’s kind is currently underway to seek answers to what role genetics play in homosexuality. While scientists suspect that more than one gene is involved in the process, finding one with a significant contribution would be groundbreaking. Critics point out that if the genetic roots of homosexuality are discovered, that information could be used in the future to try to “cure” homosexuality. At the same time, a significant discovery in genetics would help greatly in silencing those who condemn homosexuality as “abnormal” or “sin”. Click on the following link to read the story. House Approves ENDA

The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed the ENDA, The Employment Non-Discrimination Act. This groundbreaking legislation, which would provide protection from discrimination in employment for gays and lesbians, now must move through the Senate and head to President’s desk, where it’s possible it could be vetoed by ol’ GW, depending on recent changes made.
