Arson At Deja Vu Nightclub E-mail
Written by Chris Jarvis
Tuesday, 15 April 2008

The Déjà Vu nightclub was the scene of a fire early Monday morning. According to the fire department, the fire was started around 6:30AM and burned a small section of wall next to the old back door to the kitchen and office, the old Cabaret entrance off Blackstone by the freeway. Damage is around 2 feet wide and 10 feet high. No evidence of any accelerant was found. It seems there may be video surveillance of those involved, more of which will be known shortly, and then released to the media. Lee Morris of Déjà Vu is emphasizing that this was not a hate crime.

I can't believe Fresno only has a handful of gay bars, it's a growing city..
why not more? I lived in Fresno in the mid 1980's when the Express bar on
Blackstone had an awesome Sunday beerbust... is that bar still open? I now live
in Las Vegas, a city not that much bigger than Fresno.. 600,00.. metro area of
about 2,000,000. with about 12 gay bars, in my opinion a city not nearly
enough.

DejaVu is where the old Express was. The Express moved to Maroa near Shields,
went straight, gangbangers took it over and killed it, Eddie. The Circle at
Maroa and Princeton has been closed since an arson fire in 2005. The Cave is now
The Den. And the Red still lives.
Shana  - Not a hate crime?   |2008-04-27 14:49:21
Eddie has a legitimate point. I know The Express had a hand in its own demise by
initiating a shift in its customer base, but that shouldn't undermine the larger
issue - three of the five remaining queer bars (actual or perceived) in Fresno
have been SET ON FIRE. It's too bad Deja Vue is so insistent this isn't a hate
crime. These attacks need to be thrust into a public forum and regarded as an
urgent local safety / human rights issue. I know hate crimes scare away
customers, but it's short-sighted and irresponsible to conclusively assert this
recent fire was started at random. How can we simply reduce these fires to a
mere coincidence? There's plenty of evidence that Fresno gay clubs are targets
for hate crimes (especially as they become more well-known or prosperous).
People wonder why there aren't more gay businesses in town while business owners
have to contend with high security costs, harassment and continual vandalism. In...
