When I got to the location on Palm Ave, I helped Jason and Chris of GayFresno.com to attach decorations to our vehicle entry. I was very amazed that total strangers actually struck conversations with me, I felt very much accepted. (Thank you all, you know who you are. I was the one in the red feather boa and cowboy hat.) We gathered the beads we were to toss in route and we all helped get each other organized, I loved it. 

As we began our way down Olive Ave, we all danced, cheered, shouted and were in high spirits as though embarrassment was not in our vocabulary. Of course I expected fellow LGBTQ folks to cheer us on but I also saw families, straight families watch and cheer us in surrport. It actually brought a rush of feeling happiness. The happiness of how far we all have come and what those of us older, (I as well) had to endure back in the 70’s and 80’s when Gay Bashing was a national pass time. My sense of pride for myself and my gay community grew over a thousand times at that moment.

At the event after the parade, I was astounded at the number of people paying to get in and the number of vendor and informational booths. Last time I was at Fresno’s event where we had to pay only a handful went in only les than a dozen booths overall. That is why I had stopped going over fours years ago. I helped work the booth for GayFresno.com and even spoke to some cute guys, (Hi there Richard, Samuel Fairy guy from Visalia with only white short-shorts and rainbow fairy wings. I send you all hugs.) Although I worked the booth for GayFresno.com, there were moments I would get out and wander the area. The only thing is I have yet to see a headliner at the event. It has been nothing but local talent (if you can say that to some…j/k, don’t go getting your feather boas in a knot, it’s hard to take out. I know because I’m speaking from experience.) With all the cover charges taken in you’d think a headliner would come sometime. The last time there was one here it was, Gloria Gaynor who sang “I will Survive.’ How do I know this? I also performed that year under the Imperial Dove Court as, “Ms. Rocio”. I even got to meet her and chat with her a bit while she waited for her cue. (To all female performers….as my goddess Cher said once, “Top that you bitches.” No offense, kisses.)

Overall I would say that it was great, I came home more exhausted and sun burned than I ever could imagine. But, it was all worth it.

As one of the Board Members of Fresno Rainbow Pride and a past Entertainment Coordinator, I have to tell you that getting "talent" to Fresno is nearly impossible. We don't have the comfort of LA or San Francisco, where many artists reside and they simply come out for the day. For us, that means paying them to come for the entire weekend, and many of them expect first-class airfare and accommodations (yes, from SF or LA!). The old, "worn out" stars that play the county fair circuit (for example, a band that rhymes with "Mananarama" start at $10,000 per performance (plus the perks) but even barely-established acts make outrageous (by our standards) demands. We receive a few dozen e-mails from promoters each year and we do our best on virtually non-existent entertainment budget. In the past three years we have been somewhat lucky to bring the Bobbleheads (in form of John Ashfield Band) or Lips...

Nikita  - Headliners   |2008-06-15 20:21:23 To be honest with all of you I think this year was amazing. I showed up with 4 of my friends and we all had a blast. The reason we went was because of Dario the Headliner this year. And I assure you he's not local. Maybe it meant more to us because we're younger and we like our young famous artists as oppose to the older entertainers who we don't really know anything about. I don't know if he was expensive or if he had crazy requests because I don't know him personally, but I do know that every magazine cover, every show, and every CD he's ever released I have. I've seen him in concert 3 times prior to this and every time I see him he's amazing. Good job on getting him this year Fresno, If you ever bring him back we'll all be there again!
